Finally, I input it into Excel to determine what defensive value Parry would give me:Ĭhance to be hit w/o parry: Dice required to hit are 11->20 = (20-11+1)/20 = 10/20 = 50%Ĭhance to be hit w/ parry: d20 + d6 + (12-9) > Opponents attack hitting my AC (11->20) = 22.5% A simple nested set of if statements made both the error checking and choosing the correct iteration of the formula a breeze. Also some simple error checking to make sure the opponents swing wasn't an automatic miss or impossible to parry based on their to-hit modifier vs. With this setup, only the 1st, 2nd, and 4th iterations of the formula were possible. In this case, I set some arbitrary variables to match their formulas: Specifically, the top answer with the four cases were exactly what I needed. Thankfully a quick google search for a formulaic solution revealed this. This screwed with the calculation a bunch, since I would basically have to do the above 20 times for all possible iterations of a D20 dice roll. However, there was one big problem: instead of attempting to beat a static number to parry, the opponent got an opposing roll with all relevant modifiers. Then I decided to extrapolate the numbers to parrying an attack. Summing all cases leaves me with a 86.667% chance to hit. I decided to do this by hand since I only had this one case to deal with. In this case, my to-hit modifier is +12, so I needed a sum of at least 7 from the two dice.

This was a pretty easy calculation, since all I had to do was input the opponent's AC (I used the average of 19 for CR 6 of the monster manual) and calculate with the roll of a d20 + d6, what are the odds the sum of those two dice rolls plus my relevant to-hit modifiers are equal to or greater than their AC. I had a pretty basic Excel sheet setup for my character sheet that had some numbers crunched for my ability to hit CR appropriate fights. With both that and inspiration to use to bolster those chances, I decided to try and find out how my chance to be hit changed after the level up and with access to the Parry ability. For ease, I'm ignoring the offensive value of Riposting after the Parry and only focusing on its defensive utility. My favorite part of the Swashbuckler dip is the defensive utility gained by having panache points to spend to potentially parry incoming melee attacks. After a quick conversation with my GM and with our most recent level up, I am now a 5 Empiricist Investigator / 1 Inspired Blade Swashbuckler that is obviously DEX and rapier based. Getting on with it, I posted a few days ago about where to go with my lvl 5 Tiefling Empiricist Investigator, and it was pointed out to me that a dip in Inspired Blade Swashbuckler would be a good investment.

This will probably ramble, so feel free to skip to the TL DR to the end if math bores you. As such, I geek out pretty hard about math problems that pop up when leveling up and attempting to maximize utility. Let me preface this by saying one of my favorite parts of tabletop RPGs is being able to analyze how different abilities interact and being able to calculate how adding a feat/ability/etc.
